CHAPTER 22
WHATâS MY BRAND?
When Peter reaches half a million followers, agents and managers begin to call, one with persistent regularity. âHey Peter, Brad Bartlett with Legendary Management, again.â
Peter looks the name up and discovers the guy is legit, managing names far bigger than his own. The guy is also relentless; he reminds him of a young Cindy Sizemore back in the day. Despite the fact that Peter doesnât call back, he keeps leaving impossibly positive messages.
One weekday, Peter receives another message from Brad. âHey, Iâm in Nashville with Brandy Wilkins (major country recording artist). Let me buy you dinner tomorrow night. Iâll have a car pick you up and take you home. Just talk. No funny business, I swear.â
If he never has another dream, he might as well get a dinner out of it.
A nice car with a quiet, professional driver takes him from the lake to a high-end, downtown steakhouse. Itâs the kind of place he couldnât afford back when he was working full-time, much less on his few-and-far-between freelance projects.
A big man about the same age as Peter stands to greet him at a booth. Fashionably unshaven, Brad wears an expensive suit, shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sans a tie.
Brad orders the filet; Peter, the fish. They make small talk; Brad sharing some juicy, insider celebrity gossip. Itâs not about anyone Peter cares about, and yet, he finds himself drawn into the stories. Easy and personable, the manager is a hard guy not to like.
Halfway through their main course, Brad finally gets down to it. âSo, Peter, I donât pretend to understand what you do. I respect it,â he quickly adds. âI just donât understand it.â
âThat makes two of us,â Peter admits.
âIt doesnât matter,â Brad reassures him. âI can help you get your message out.â
Peter chews for him to continue.
âWhen you have a dream, what do you do?â Brad answers his own question since his prospective clientâs mouth is full of halibut. âYou post it, right? Then you do a small interview or two.â
âI was on Modern Miracles,â Peter reminds him. âAnd the Carlos Diego Show.â
âLike I said, you do an interview on cable, or a podcast,â the agent says, dismissively. âOkay. First. Youâd have five times the number of followers if you engaged more and cross-promoted with other influencers. We have a person who can do a lot of that for you. Youâre still in charge of your own content, only now youâll have someone to handle the day-to-day.â
âThat would be nice,â Peter admits. He definitely could use some help. His Flutter account keeps growing despite the fact that he doesnât know what heâs doing.
âSecond. Iâll connect you with the right venues,â Brad goes on. âNo more messing around. Iâm talking sit-down chats in celebrity-friendly formats with big, national audiences.â
Peter nods, taking a sip of the pinot gris the server was quite enthusiastic about.
âThird. I can get you a book deal.â He shrugs. âAnyone could get you a book deal. I can get you a better deal.â He points an accusing finger at Peter.
